I did a few more things today:
1. Tested triggering the right shocks two valves with the same 4.5 volts and 1 amp. I "think" i could hear one valve trigger, but not the other. I will try with a higher voltage tomorrow - maybe 6v.
2. Did a continuity test on the three bare wires on the left, broken shock. Testing between each of the bar wires to see if there was contact inside the rest of the covered wire. I made the mistake of not thinking about what Ohms the continuity buzzer would go off at. So connecting any one wire to any other wire showed "continuity", which was puzzling. I thought i had a short in the wires inside the rest of the covered wire or in the shock itself. Of course i did not have a true short. When i switched to reading the actual Ohms, i got 3.6 ohms from the positive of each valve to ground (which is the correct reading), and about 6.7 Ohms between the two positives - which makes sense, since the path taken is from one positive terminal, thru the coil, then to the common ground, then back through the second coil and to the other positive terminal. So, the resistance between the two positive terminals should be about double what one coil shows.
Plan tomorrow is to try to trigger the valves with about 6v, and then to cover the bare wires with liquid tape, then wrap them up with normal tape, and then clear codes and drive. And see what happens...

Andrew: Did you solve the problem? I have the same issue as you with fault code 50 Valve coils. Measured resistance on my front struts and the ground wire on the front right strut was showing abnormal resistance.

The front shocks ended up testing out fine...I did use the liquid wire coating and that seemed to hold really well. However, i still had problems with my shocks, like busted top hat, and just old and worn dampers. I am just now in the process of installing BC Racing Coilovers (linear damping) with Swift springs. $1700. Im not trying to slam the car, i just want control over ride height and damping and i want an easy install, and i want to be able to control rear damping without taking the back seats apart. i got the fronts installed with the default ride height from BC and default damping of 15 (out of 30). The car was transformed...no more clunking, firm but compliant damping, less roll in the corners, way better at absorbing some of the road bumps around me, etc. The car is too low and i will be raising it to max ride height (about 1" drop at the front at max), and the car is on a lift now in the garage with rear seats apart and ready to have rears installed. I will let you know how that goes.
Basically i just gave up on EDC....and after testing out the front alone i should have made this chnage ages ago.

Cool! Please let me know!
I have been thinking about deleting the EDC myself. Is there a lot of options out there? Bilstein is one I guess. What about the self-leveling suspension. Do you loop it like E32/E34?

I dont have the self leveling. Mine is a 2001 740iL Sport that just has the EDC. But yes you can just loop the EDC.
I priced out different options a while ago. These are probably higher now with trump Taxes (Tariffs)
1. OEM regular sport shocks - $1500
2. EDC - $5500
3. BC Racing - $1700
So i went with BC Racing for damping and height control and cost.

BC Racing looks like a good kit. I assume you went for the "BR-series"? How does Swift springs differ from the ones included?
I can not wait for the day my car will be nice to drive again! Btw, would be nice to see ones your car is done with the new suspension in place. Maybe that can help me make up my mind about what to choose. I am after an OEM-look so I guess I will go for the highest setting both front and rear. Currently the car is on 20" Alpina Softlines.

Heres a doc i wrote on the install and it has some pictures of the car after install with the coilovers set at max height. If you have any questions let me know.

Awesome! I got my hands on a used set of front dampers in visually good condition. Lets see how that goes!
