Elektrik: Electricity consumption when idle ?

Hi chaps,

Just wondering if anybody of you had an educated guess about the electricity consumption (in Ampere x Stunden) of the various on-board electric features when the "Schlussel" is in position "0" (ie, the car is in the parking lot !!!!):

Navi/GPS = ?
CD- wechsler (6-fach) = ?
Alarmanlage = ?
other = ?


In other words, how long would it take for my battery (110 Ampere-Stunden)to be killed by just leaving the car standing still ? Weeks ? Months ?

Hi Provolone,

i can´t give you facts, but it takes between two to four weeks (depends of the car and the equipment) to exhaust the battery.

but position "0" on the ignition key means "all power off". So IMHO its the same what you would like to know. The link describes the power consumption on a car, where the ignition Key is not in the lock.

You also can test it with an ampere-meter:

1. disconnect "-" from battery
2. connect an amperemeter (f.e. 10 A) between "-" on battery and the brown wire
3. disconnect the both lamps of the luggage bay (need to be opend to watch ampere-meter)
4. pull out ignition key
5. close all doors

beginning 2-4 A, few minutes later 0,6A and after all a 0.03A - this is a normal value.

Whith this consumption a 90AH Battery could last about 83 days before it wents broke.

I will do the test with an Amperemeter next week (the wife will be with the mother-in-law )

Any guess, however, if GPS and CD-wechsler do consume some Saft ?

battery drain - a collection of posts

Since practically every hollow space within an 8/7/5 is host to a control unit, many with memory and sensors, it is no wonder the E31/32/34 has such a high resting current drain. About 1 amp/hour drain about every 20 hours. Here's the figures:
With the trunk/luggage compartment lights off:
1.) Driver's door open: 4.8 - 5.0 Amps
2.) Driver's door closed: 4.1 Amps for 20 seconds then reduced to approx. 450-470mA for next 16 mins. then reduced to approx. 50mA
With the trunk/luggage compartment lights on:
1.) Driver's door open approx. 6.1-6.4 Amps
2.) Driver's door closed--approx. 5.9-6.1 Amps for 20 seconds, then reduced to approx. 2.5 Amps for the next 16 mins, then reduced to approx. 50mA
