Hi Petri,
If your E23 was built earlier than 9/1985 you got coarse splines, you can fit wheels from E12, E21 (1979->secound series), and early E24 series (first series ->1982).
If it's built after 9/1985, you got the fine splines and unfortunatly, there's nothing that I'm aware of would fit ... "maybe" those from E24 secound generation???
Regards,
45er

Hello 45er, seems that I have a bad luck in this case because my 735iA
was manufactured 3/86. But if I remember correctly, there was this same
transition to fine splines in E28 series also. Do you think it would be
possible to use E28 series steering wheel which is made after 9/85.
Best regards
petri

E28 had Allways fine splines...
I'm not sure about E28... but I think it dosen't fit. What I know, is that E30 dosen't fit because of it's steering/key lock system and I've heard that E28 & E30's fit each other.... So, "logically" I don't think E28 fit E23's of 9/1985 and later... but again, this is only my WAG...
All that been said, I didn't have that knowledge like 6 years ago when I fit a coarse wheel on my 1986 (735i) ... I never did, noticed any thing "wrong" with it & drove it around like 2 years with that wheel on. Then I bought my 1982 (745i) and decided to fit that wheel on it ... then I noticed that wheel surprisingly "fell down" along steering columne splines just by itself... so easy it has to fit when splines're right On my 1986 I had to push it down a bit... oh nothing savage (otherwise I'd stoped!!), just it needed to be pushed in, gently...
Regards,
45er

The early E28s had also coarse splines, but I think the locking system is different from the E23. E28, E30 and E32 (and I think also E34) fit each other. I know that absolutely for sure, because I'm using the same steering wheel (original BMW 3-spoke sports) for a long time now and had it in my E28, in my E30 and now I drive my E32 with it ;o)

OK, this explains what I was thinking... E30 & E28 are the same, then not the same as E23... even with fine splines... only because steering wheel lock system

Same as I was thinking ;o)
I think the E23 was the last model with the "old" locking-system, E28 an later models had the hub-based locking system.
So you really seem to have a Problem, because the fine-spline mount in combination with the old locking system is AFAIK the rarest of all BMW Steering-wheel mounts
PS: I even don't think that a late E24s steering-wheel would fit, because the E24 is technically based on the E28 (first series based on the E12). Only the exterior design is near to the E23, because BMW first designed the "Big Coupé" and then decided to have a big saloon coming out with a similar design and superior technology ;o)

So, did the late E24's had also the same steering lock system as E28 & E30's??

Well, I don't know EXACTLY, but I think so - perhaps one of our E24 owners could tell us more....

Hello, it seems that even BMW do not have these steering wheels available
anymore. So I just have to hope finding used one.
Best regards
Petri
