Thanks - i have emailed them (brt automotive) with all the info about my car and current shocks to see if they are able to refurbish, and if so for what cost. Once i get an answer i will update for future interested people.

Updates would be nice. Sooner or later it will become relevant for everyone with EDC I guess..

I heard back already from brt. Here is what they said - sounds like a good option and perhaps better than Nagenast. I have emailed them back with some more questions on turnaround time and on "foreigners" having to pay VAT.
From BRT:
Hello, yes we can overhaul these shocks.
Front and rear costs €435 each including German VAT.
Unfortunately I can't say what the shipping and customs costs will cost.
The dampers are sandblasted and re-powder-coated, the interior is cleaned, measured and worn parts are replaced.
Seals and guides are all replaced.
We can also replace piston rods, spring plates and valves if they are defective (but these are not included in the price).

Is there no one in the US who can do such work? Sending the shocks to Germany will be quite expensive I guess?
