Any Bad Engines in E65/66

1. Sorry do not speak German. But, I hope someone can help!

I had a 2004 745i. Unfortunately I had an engine noise which sounded like a worn small end bearing or possibly piston slap from one cylinder. Especially noticeble when cold or at tickover, mileage was quite high at 91,000 (140 tkm?)

I sold this car but now wish to buy another E65 but am unsure of the 735i/745i especially as the service manager at my dealer seems to believe the problem may not be so unusual.

Is there any reason for me to worry, and I ask here because I think this forum would be likely to have brought any problems to light?

I am considering a 730i, but would prefer a V8!

I do not think that there is any particular problem with the engines in the current 7 series. Regarding this forum, I cannot remember any thread about an engine damage.

Hi Silver 50,
as HighWheels already has written, the N62 (V8) engines have no specific problems, which you have to be afraid of...
On my point of view, there´s only one weak point in this engine concept - the water pump.
As an symptom of old age or due to wrong mounting, it´s possible to get an axial force on the water pump bearings until it gets totally defective.
This could sound like a bad bearing or a bad belt drive guide roll.
Not necessary to say, that a bad water pump can cause a damaged engine.

But this is an peripherial problem and not directly one of the engine itself

Up to now I haven´t heard about other specific problems like leakage air problems on the older M60 (V8) or anything else.

IMHO it´s a very good engine concept - enough power combined with a bearable gasoline consumption.

My sincere thanks for your posts, I was going to avoid a 735i or 745i and possibly settle for a 730i. Either that or I was thinking about spending more and buying a 2005 750i.

I have always bought my 7 Series at reasonable prices, and now the 735 and 745's are great value. I also like the fact these have "DYNAMIC DRIVE" (the automatic adjusting anti-roll bars) I felt this feature on my 745i transformed the handling qualities of the car, and as i'm sure some know this is only availiable as an expensive option on 2005- cars, an option you can only have in conjunction with the EDC system.

I drove a 730d last week and found the car did not handle nearly as well as my 745i, so the "DYNAMIC DRIVE" definately works!
