Gear box not working

Hello from finland!

I just bought me a 730ia -89, and the gear box is not working very well.
It kind of jumps from first gear to the 3rd gear.
Even if i try to lock it on the second gear, it doesn`t change from 1st gear at all. Otherwise gear box is working propely. I changed the oils, it was ok. No smelly and colour was red.
It is like there is no second gear at all.
I am thinking of starting to change the gear box, but i can not find it from Finland, is there any good scrap yard near Rostock where i could find one?
Or if somebody has this kind of gear box to sell, my friend is coming next week to germany and he could take it with him.
In my car has a ZF4hp22 gear box, however, bmw vin decoder tells me that there should be ZF4hp22/eh?
Still,it seems that gear box is this cars original.
So, if some one knows what is wrong with my gear box or has a Zf4hp22 gear box to sell, please contact me by privat messages.

Very IMPORTANT: Make a picture of the name plate of the transmission. On the block might be a different name. But the plate shows the exact number of the transmission.
AND!!!!!!
Check if the connection on the trans box to the control has 7 or 8 cables!!! VERY IMPORTANT. Here a pic from my trans with the plate so that you can see where to look for the plate.

Hi jarmo,

first we have to check, if Your car is from early 1989 or later. The reason is, the first 730i only had a mechanical transmission, without EH-switch.
This is the switch in the console left of the gear lever with the position points S-E-M. Both transmission versions are 4HP22 but the electronic one has additionally "EH".

I know that problem from my 1987 730i, which does that from 2nd to 4th gear - sometimes seems as if there is no 3rd between - but only if car is warm.
If You have the EH-Switch, just try to switch gears manually ("M"), if not - hmmm...then try oil change with filter first.

There is no s,e,m switch in my car, and it is zf4hp22 without EH.
My car does not change gears at all when it is cold.
I did change oils and filter too, no inprovement.

And if i replace this ZF4hp22 => ZF4hp22/EH, how much work there is?
These ZF4hp22/EH gear boxes i can find in finland.

For change from non-EH to EH You need

- the gear box
- the electronic box (is behind the loudspeaker on the right side)
- the switch and the console where it fits in

The cable should be there, its in my 1987 one, too.

For I never tried that, others can post ideas, I think something has to be connected to the motor's electronic, too.

I checked the plate and the electric connector.
It says ZF 4hp22, and there was only 2 pins on the connector.
The connector was backwards from the plate about 10 cm, is it the right one?

Where did You find a 2-pin-connector? On the gear box? If so, its the mechanical one, as You said.

Yes, on the gear box.
Is it possible for you to find me a box like that from those scrap yards in germany, for me it is a bit difficult because of the language.
I would be very grateful for your help...

You can try to get those from ebay.de, thats where i would buy one.



I know, this guy has not only one gear box.
