Scheint wohl oefter vorzukommen am E34, in USA meint man, es liegt an einem defekten Geblaesemotor

MY CAR CAUGHT FIRE THIS MORNING!!!
My E34 blower had been acting up recently, squeaking and making noise. It would only start on high but would continue to run once turned down a click or two. I had had this problem on the E32 once before, it killed a SWORD once, and I was always able to use the blower on high. I did eventually replace the blower on the E32, but figured I'd hold out on my E34 beater until it quit for good.
This morning, I realized the heat was off and turned the blower on to ~2. I wasn't paying attention and then a minute or two later I realized I wasn't getting any airflow. I cranked the blower up to max and it filled the car with smoke in a hurry. I promptly turned the heat off, pulled the car over in MD/DC/VA rush hour traffic, shut it off, and inspected. In panic mode, I wasn't able to find the blower motor fuse, which was my first thought. It seemed to have stopped smoking, so I hopped back in and started to drive it out of traffic for further inspection. As soon as I started driving, I realized it was still smoking, so I drove it 1/16 mi around the corner (out of traffic now), shut it off again, located the fuse and yanked it out.
With the fuse now out, smoke was still billowing out of the vents... I check the trunk, no fire extinguisher in this car! SHIT! <STARTS TO CRAP PANTS>. (I usually carry a fire extinguisher in my cars) I looked for a tool to disconnect the battery (thinking something else was shorted) and no go.. (I forgot all about the BMW toolkit that might have had a wrench)
I dialed 911 as I continued to pull all the fuses, relays, etc.
30 seconds later (still on the phone with 911), a fire truck coming back from a call happened to be driving by. I flagged them down and they were able to put it out with a water-charged extinguisher down the intake vent..

What caused mine to burn, was one of the fanbearings, according to the insurance company anyways.

if your blower motor is stalling OR squealing, replace it now before the car burns down. Stalling = heat and more current draw. Squealing = failing bearings in the blower motor.

resistor pack is installed in my car, pretty easy to do about 15 min and cheap. So far to try and avoid this I replace my filters often, replaced the resistor pack, lowered the fuse ratings, and carry an extinguisher. There isn't much more you can do in my mind.

Yeah pretty sure that would have been the cause. THe important thing is not just to replace the resistor but also make sure that the entire cavity is cleaned out / vacuumed at least annually when the cabin filter is changed as debris can cause even a good resistor to start a fire.

So we have a long-time customer at the shop, whom I'll call Mr. X, because I really don't need to mention names. Mr. X Called me out of the blue on my cell today, he wanted to see how I was, and talk to me about a friend of his who had a Bmw. He said he thought it was a 5, but may have been a 3. Thought it was a 2 door, but it was under a tarp so he didn't really know, he'd only seen it at night from a distance. Supposedly it had had a dash fire but it wasn't too bad, and the owner was looking at options for the car. I told him to forward my contact info and I was interested in talking to the guy.
A little while later my phone rang, and it was Mr. Y, he now had my number and was looking to see what could be done with the car. In the middle of the conversation I interrupted him and asked if he was home, and could I come look at the car? He said of course, come on out. I did. The pics will tell most of the story, but let this serve as a warning for all of us!
The blower motor caught fire and the car was a loss. Totaled. Done. Interior is 100% gone, body panels are pretty good. The hood has two dents that may or may not bang out. The suspension is all recently done. It has the Dinan turbo kit. It's got the BBS RC (I think, I don't know BBS wheels, feel free to correct me) with new tires. Huge brake calipers. The owner had been asking a lot for it previously, and it was to deter people from actually buying it. You know the deal, ask high so when you get your price you feel good sitting on that pile of cash.
We talked for a good couple hours and really hit it off, and the current plan is to find out what the market for Dinan turbo cars is. If it's cost effective, we'll pick up a super clean 95 e34 somewhere and all the Dinan goodies will go into that. It's got the built m30, owner says it put down 425hp at the wheels. If the cost of swapping it all over isn't worthwhile it will likely be offered as a whole parts car, or parted out as a few large items (engine/turbo, 5spd swap kit, suspension, wheels, brakes, etc...)
We talked about bringing it back with a FULL interior swap, new harness etc..., but since the A pillars have been partly cooked, including the firewall, coupled with the salvage title it's just not going to be safe or worth it.
So, without further ado...

how did the blower motor catch fire? was someone in the vehicle?
is there anything people can do to prevent a similar catastrophe?
---------------------------
Probably seized up due to a bad bearing, the blower motor had to have been squealing.
----------
So far as the blower motors go, the motors may exhibit symptoms of stoppage, but more than that they just go bad internally and pull more amps. It's not enough to pop the fuse, but because of the high amp draw the wiring gets REALLY hot, and well... you see the results. It's not an uncommon thing in e34s, I've seen several in junkyards burned, all from the blower motor.
