SUBJECT: Air Conditioning Microfilter Introductions

MODELS: All Except E30
Situation: Several inquiries have reached BMW regarding the introduction dates of the electrostatically charged microfilter. All vehicles produced 9/91 or later (except the E30) are equipped 100% with the microfilter. In addition, all E31 vehicles have been equipped 100% with two microfilters since their start of production.
Vehicles with the microfilter are supposed to have a red "Maintenance Reminder" decal in the glove compartment. However, on vehicles produced during 9/91 - 5/92, many of the labels were inadvertently left off. These vehicles are, however, equipped with a microfilter. Refer to S.I. 64 12 92 (3632) for further information on the microfilter decal. Some vehicles produced prior to 9/91 may be equipped with a microfilter, and can be positively
identified by the presence of the "Maintenance Reminder" decal in the glove compartment.The procedure for removal/installation of the microfilter element is contained in all current Repair Manual microfiche. For information concerning typical microfilter replacement intervals and filter capabilities, refer to S.I. 64 06 92 (3518) .

SUBJECT: Microfilter Information Label Missing

MODELS: All except E30
Situation: Vehicles with air conditioning and the electrostatic microfilter (all U.S. vehicles produced
from 9/91, except E30) normally have a red decal in the glove compartment. However, during 9/91 - 5/92 production of vehicles, many of the labels were inadvertently left off.
Note: The microfilter information decal in the vehicle glovebox will be black in color starting from 5/92 production. The illustration below approximates the size and appearance of the newer decal:
Affected Vehicles: All models (except E30) produced from 9/91
through 5/92. Solution: When the microfilter requires replacement, make certain that vehicles in the affected production range have the microfilter information decal installed in the glovebox. The decal will be either red or black in color, and installed on the flat surface next to the orange SRS (airbag) label. If the decal is missing, and the car is microfilter equipped (produced from 9/91), the decal should be added in the glovebox on the flat surface next to the orange SRS label. A decal will be shipped in the same package with the replacement microfilter. Parts Information: A decal will be shipped in the same package with the replacement microfilter. Note that if the vehicle already has the decal in place, the dealer should save the extra new decal for use on other vehicles which might have the decal missing.
These decals will not be made available from BMW Parts at this time.
