Subject: RE: BMW wood trims

Hi Marko

Nice hearing from you.

Sorry about the late reply. This is caused by a very hot summer J and an internet connection, that is supposed to be always-on, but instead is always-off. This messages is written Sunday 12:44pm CET, but I don’t know when I will have the chance to send it…

Somehow the wood trims on all 7-series end up with a yellow color. Not very nice, is it? I also tried just putting on a coat of clear lack, but it somehow didn’t make that much of a difference.

A few answers…

Only very little sanding, please! It is so easy to buff away too much and then you will have to buy a new set of trims. I used very fine wet paper and did it all by hand. Sand down a bit and put the trim under the fosset. Still shiny? Then there is some of the old lack still left. Sand a bit more…
Don’t know the English word for the product I used to get the dark color. It’s called Bejse here in Denmark, but I don’t think that will help you much. It is a powder, which you dissolve in liquid, either water or spirit (two different kinds of powder). This product darkens the color of the wood but leaves the texture visible. You pick the right color (I chose mahogany), mix the stuff and paint it on. Let it dry and put on a clear coat. If you are able to find a composite lack, this should give the best result. I wasn’t so lucky, so I had to buff very hard to get a shiny finish.

Hope some of this was useful. It really is worth the effort to trim the trims J The car looks completely different afterwards.

Good luck with your project.

Best regards

Stefan
