I gave you a wrong advice.

It works this way: Pull the i-drive twice in the same direction (which one doen't matter, as long as it's twice the same).

Then the "Menu" screen apperas.

Now press the idrive. The monitor will turn black (except the footline with temperature, date and so forth which will remain visible.
