In 1985 he joined the Fiat Group where he was introduced to plaster models for the first time. The first years at Fiat were frustrating, as the design centre battled to get its designs approved against stiff competition from established houses like Giugiaro, Pininfarina and Bertone.
His breakthrough came in 1993 with the Fiat Coupe, and was followed in 1994 by the 145. By 1992, Bangle was head of the design centre, but the same year Wolfgang Reitzle offered him the post as director of BMW design at the FIZ in Münich. Since then he has been responsible for models like the Z3, M-Coupe, Z8, Mini and now the new 7-Series.
