Hi
I have an E38 from 2000 with the M57 diesel engine in it.
6 months ago I encountered a bizarre problem with my car.
It’s a long story... but I desperately need help...
I was driving along the highway in Sweden when I hit a bump in the car - not a big one, but enough to make the splashguard underneath the oil pan to come loose.
The splashguard (plastic cover) was fastened at the rear, so it scraped itself along the road and made a terrible noise when this happened - I thought the car was about too explode!!... but of course when I saw the cover I tried
to release it, but had to drive along to a workshop miles away since I couldn’t reach the screws underneath the car.
Well well... I managed to unscrew the cover and drove along.... but only a few miles later the car stopped.... for no
reason whatsoever... no error message... nothing. I tried to start it - but no luck... the starter engine turned but
the engine wouldn’t start... so I called road service, and they towed me to the nearest BMW dealer/workshop (130
kilometres...) and they soon discovered that the inline diesel-pump was broken thereby... no fuel.
Well they ordered a new pump, that took 2 days replaced it - and the car started and worked fine (I thought)
After driving from the workshop, with a happy smile on my face - the car stopped again 10 kilometres from the
workshop...again - no warnings - it just stopped!! - I pulled over turned off the ignition (sweared a hell of a lot...) and tried to start it again - but to my amazement it started..
I the drove off again with my left hand on the steering wheel and the other calling the workshop another kilometres and the same thing happen....
I decide to drive to my local dealership/workshop, since the ones who changed the fuel pump didn’t have time to look at it..
The trip was 500 km long, and I found out that the car wouldn’t stop if i was careful with the pedal... At the time I had installed a commonrail booster gadget on my car, from sancodk.dk.
Then the nightmare begins....
My local workshop (authorized and certified bmw workshop) started to diagnose the car up and down.. finding nothing.
They further diagnosed it whilst driving, where they established that diesel pressure on the commonrail dropped, causing the engine to stall - this only happening between a certain rpm range (3400-3600 rpm)
After further checking the replaced all the sensors on the commonrail system, cleaned the fuel lines/system (making sure the return line was no blocked)
The entire wire harness in the engine compartment was changed, engine control unit changed, crankshaft sensor changed.... and much more......
But the damn car still stops for no reason.
Now 6 months later the problem is still there - the workshop guys are almost going crazy for not finding the fault... and I... well I don’t thing ill be buying a 730d again....
The only thing that they haven’t changed is the HP diesel pump (the mechanical one)...
Could this pump be causing this kind of fault ?...
Another tip I got was the ignition key/lock - could the electrical system in the lock be worn and cause this?
The fault is becoming more and more seldom, but still very irregular - I can use the car - but it no longer gives me joy driving.
So is there anyone "out there" who has encountered any kind of problem like this, or any similar problem - or who has a good tip...
Anything would be much appreciated...
PS the workshop tells me that there has never been recorded any car of this model with this kind of malfunction EVER
... not in my country (Norway) or in any other European country EVER....not even Germany... so I am dying to prove them wrong...
And I’m soon running out of money...
Torben
