since your friend would not have a chance to send the defective transmission back for transport cost etc. I would recommend to ask ZF in Dortmund who overhaul all ZF car transmission and are also the manufacturer of same.

The may be willing to sell an overhauled tx w/o getting the bad one back. Be aware however that the new transmission has to be programmed after installation. To my knowledge this can only be done by a BMW dealer. At my last visit to ZF about 18month ago they could not do it.

If you send some details p/n of the old transmission etc. I can give them a call. Send a U2U and I will find out.

BTW an overhauled or rather factory rebuilt tx is probably better than a new one.
