Folding mirrors retrofit kit?

1.st i'm sorry for my poor english...

if you wouldt like to have a look in this document, you will see, that the E90 (the new 3 series) has  folding mirrors

so what is the reason for not obtaining folding mirrors in the USA?
or what is the reason for no adaptive E65 breake-light here in Europe?

It all depends on national regulatory affairs....

Because of an anormal movement of the E65 mirror in moving, there has been no allowance in the USA yet. If you look close to the folden mirror, you will see, that its top is coming not in a horizontal way near to the vehicule, but in a manner approx 70° above. So this wouldt cause problems in a automatically carwash unit, which isn't suitable for these mirrors.
I'm not shure, if this is the real reason, but i think differences in security rules between Europe & the USA are the real reasons.

First of all: there is no kit, I asked a dealer yesterday. You would need new mirrors, eventually new wiring harnesses, a new control panel, a new control unit for the bus system, programming, installation (first) and a lot of money. If somebody is willing to attempt this. For the E38 there was retrofit kit. Buit that car was IMO better and certainly less complicated.

Ich hab mir mal Gedanken gemacht. Der einzige Grund der mir eingefallen ist, sind die anderen Temperaturen in Nordamerika.

Kann es sein das bei extremen Minusgraden der Spiegel sich nicht mehr bewegt beim losfahren? Dann wäre man ohne Spiegel unterwegs. Weiß nicht ob das der Grund sein könnte...

heh... yeah, saw your post on roadfly. thanks for checking with the dealer. oh well, i guess i'll continue to fold the mirrors up manually

Das "ohne Spiegel unterwegs" ansich dürfte der Grund sein:
es ist ja möglich, mit hochgeklappten Spiegeln zu fahren. Wenns dann kracht haben wir den typischen amerikanischen Haftungs/Schadensersatzfall: "Ich bin nicht schuld, weil der Hersteller (BMW) es versäumt hat, eine Zwangsaufklappautomatik einzubauen..."

Du kennst ja den Spruch, der in jedem U.S. Auto im rechten Außenspiegel prangt:
"Objects in mirror are closer, than they appear"

Aber es bleibt dennoch eine Vermutung, denn beim neuen 3er in den USA geht's ja auch zu ordern....

i dont think 3er has power folding mirrors. probably only manual folding mirrors, just like my 7er.
ich denke nicht, daß 3er Energie faltende Spiegel hat. vermutlich nur manuelle faltende Spiegel, gerade wie mein 7er.

No.....
if you look on page17 of the  *.pdf file already posted before, you will see, if you order the premium package for the 3series: power folding mirrors are coming with it.
But we don't know yet, the technical way choosen by BMW to avoid driving with folden mirror's....

Jungs unser Amerikanischefreund hat schon anklappbare Spiegel aber die sind Manuel und nicht elektrisch! Und er fragt nach der moeglichkeit die Elektrik nach zu ruesten.


As you probably know there are a few countries in Europe were people refuse to speak english and unfortunately your car comes from one of them. :( I am sorry that I didn't see your posting any sooner cause the misunderstanding of my fellow german forum users was/is big.

But as one of the guys here wrote, adding the elektric parts isn't the only thing you will need to do. The wireing harness will need to be modified/extended, the car software will need to be updated as well, and the big question is if you are going to be able to get that software in the US.

For example on my E65 the mirrors don't fold up at first, the car just locks itself frmo the remote. I keep pressing the close button longer the alarm goes on and then the mirrors fold up, but this is something that you can set in the software.
